Hotels are commonly seen as convenient, short term rental lodgings located in, or on the way to, an area where travel takes one for some other purpose, whether business or pleasure. In this case the traveler will often spend little time at the facility, and little money, provided the room meets minimal requirements for a clean, quiet place to sleep. Some special accommodations however are the attraction themselves, and are at least partly the reason for the trip to the area. The scope of this article does not encompass limited service, overnight or budget accommodations. Those have a role to play as a place to rest on the way somewhere else, and can easily meet those needs and expectations of the traveler. They usually will not be the type of place someone might plan a truly memorable traveling experience around though.

There are several types that will serve that purpose. Among them is the type found in scenic areas, be they on the ocean, near a volcano, in mountains, in a rain forest, or with a sunny desert climate. Often this base is found in a remote area. Here the vacationer can experience quiet relaxation and enjoyment of scenic vistas, or participation in activities such as biking, hiking, boating, hunting, fishing, climbing or skiing.

Another type has a unique venue. Guests here can live for a time in lodging in caves, trees, or pyramids, on artificial islands, or underwater. Some are unique architectural anomalies, perhaps designed by Frank Lloyd Wright, or so old they have been in operation since the year 718. There are even several that are shoe shaped, after the tale of the old woman that lived with her children in a shoe.

Some are found in renovated mines, bunkers, prisons, railway terminals, airliners, and ocean liners. Others are built each year of ice or snow, or are located in wintry areas, with outdoor natural hot spring baths.

A third type are those that are self contained and built around some sort of activity. They have facilities owned by the establishment, on site, which will keep the guests occupied. Examples here are resort casinos, golf resorts, conference centers, theme parks, and those at or near horse or auto racetracks and sports stadiums.

Yet another possibility are those types offering healthy activities. These might include integrative medical treatment, spas, massage, yoga, healthy meals, fitness training, meditation, stress management, life style modification, or spiritual retreats.

For some the draw is large urban areas with their cultural attractions such as theater, concerts, museums, or shopping and boutiques. While some people seek to escape the city and get away from people, others enjoy the 24 hour a day big city energy and find it invigorating.

Students wanting a place to blow off steam during spring break have destination hotels to serve them. Motorcyclists or other groups can gather for rallies with others having similar hobbies or interests. Sometimes events attract divergent types of individuals with some common pursuit like financial investment or Star Trek television programs or films.

If you are a citizen of the United States, you are allowed to enter Mexico, the Bahamas or Canada without a passport. Using a driver license is sufficient. Airline travel or automobile travel to any of these locations can be tiring. A comfortable hotel is very important.

Torquay is an attractive seaside town in Devon, England. It attracts many visitors all through the year but particularly in summer when the population more than triples to about 200,000. There are many Torquay hotels to cater for this surge.

The United Kingdom is famous for its haunted castles and standing stone circles. There are many things to see and do which will satisfy the cravings of those who seek the strange and the unusual. Never mind Stonehenge. To say that it is disappointing is not entirely accurate, but it is difficult to enjoy the site properly. The public is somewhat restricted in their viewing, and “druids” get in the way of photos.

One of the more interesting circles of standing stones exists just on the border between Oxfordshire and Warwickshire. Known collectively as the Rollright Stones, this fairly complex megalithic structure is made of at least three distinct circles. It is said that it is not possible to count the stones, and that no matter what is tried to keep an accurate tally the number will be different upon subsequent enumeration.

Some people like to ponder the mysteries of the earth, while others enjoy thinking about the limitless sky above. Suffolk is home to a very important site for those who are interested in Unidentified Flying Objects. Just outside RAF Woodbridge is the location of Rendlesham Forest.

The Rendlesham Forest Incident occurred in December of 1980, and it may have been the most important and famous UFO event in Britain’s history. Sometimes referred to as “Britain’s Roswell” this incident involved military personnel from both American and British forces. Many eyewitness reports over a multiple day period have managed to pique the curiosity of alien hunters for over thirty years now. The event remains a mystery even today, and those witnesses who swore statements saying that there was something strange on those nights now wonder if things have been deliberately covered up by the military.

England is hardly the only country in Britain to have experienced weird things. Ireland, Wales, and Scotland are similarly replete with fantastic stories. Many of the most popular ones involve supernatural animals, often roaming the moors hungrily. Sir Arthur Conan Doyle used these myths as the vague basis of one of his most popular Sherlock Holmes mysteries, The Hound Of The Baskervilles.

It is not right to have a conversation about the unusual and strange things in Britain without mentioning the nation’s most well known monster. Somewhere in the black waters of Loch Ness people say that a great sea serpent lurks. Reports of this animal have been going on for centuries. Photographers line the shores of Loch Ness every single day, each trying to snap a picture of the legendary animal. Unfortunately for amateur monster hunters, there have been no conclusive or even particularly provocative photographs taken to date.

Britain is absolutely full of strange sights and odd sites. Maybe next time you think of vacations in the UK, you might consider trading the seaside for the standing stones, or the Lake District for the Loch. Britain has much to offer the lover of the unusual.
